Recording and composing is always an ongoing project, aside from the day job.
I compose, engineer and produce my own music at my self-built studio, Mushy Peas.
My latest album is available on Spotify and all major streaming platforms
I take pride in having a diverse and eclectic taste and strive to experiment with these genres in my compositions, with a built-in punk ethos of DIY, but an equal love of progressive music.
The primary elements I draw from are hard rock, punk/new wave, funk, jazz, blues, metal, prog, electronic and classical. I’m aiming to produce a mix of songs, instrumental grooves and soundscapes.
I also purposely write instrumentals, in part since I don’t sing myself.
I also I enjoy TV and film music, and feel that my composing style particularly suits TV.
What’s in a name?
Previously, I’d recorded with the name “Underline“, with an album 2001-2005 between those years. I changed the name as many bands called this have come and gone!
Under A Mile suits what I’m trying to do, which is move forwards with my music, and take the listener on some kind of journey – hopefully not a Pacer train!
Who am I ?
I’m a home studio musician, with a day job that is not directly in music.
Having said that I’ve written lots of software in MIDI and Audio applications,
and professional broadcast areas.
But I’ll stop there and leave that kind of story to LinkedIn.
My aspirations in music are to produce some tuneful chunky grooves
and soundscapes with a fair dose of prog thrown in.

I play in bands on bass, and latterly on drums. This is a good foil for my recording projects, not only for my own improvement but also for nurturing recording collaborations.
I’m usually also the resident recording engineer for my bands, the one who’s setting up a multitrack recording of a live gig while also playing, or engineering our demos.
My home recording setup is a small room by studio standards, with a drum ioslation booth with floating floor and sound treatment. Through use of up to date DAW plug-ins, I aim to achieve modern sounds.
I usually DI most guitar and bass lines, since I have some modern multiFX boards with good modelling sounds.
What Do I Play?
I should be most competent at bass since I’ve most experience live and most years under my belt. But drums is now a close second. I’ve always played guitars at home, and a couple of times live. I’m always learning new stuff from Guitar Techniques magazines. I play a little piano also. I’ve not had any serious formal training, but over the years have had lessons in guitar, piano and most recently drums, with special mention to the tuition from Jason Baker
